OATUU Affiliate FISEMA Calls for Unity to Restore Dignity Amid Mass Demonstrations across Madagascar

The Firaisan’ny Sendikan’ny Mpiasa eto Madagasikara (FI.SE.MA.), an affiliate of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU), has sounded the alarm over the deepening crisis in Madagascar, following mass demonstrations that erupted across the country.

The demonstrations, which spread rapidly to most major cities, were fuelled by widespread anger at declining living conditions, lack of access to essential services such as energy and water, and years of economic mismanagement. The demonstrations however have been marred by incidents of looting and arson—acts which FI.SE.MA. warns are being used to discredit the legitimate movement of the people.

The union is calling for urgent unity and dialogue to address the root causes of poverty, inequality, and governance failures, which it says have robbed the Malagasy people of their dignity and fundamental rights. In its communiqué issued on 26 September 2025, FI.SE.MA. condemned the violence and destruction, insisting that those responsible be held accountable. Yet the union was equally clear that these isolated acts should not overshadow the just demands of the population.

It reaffirmed that poverty, inequality, and the capture of national wealth by a privileged few are the real ills afflicting Madagascar. FI.SE.MA. is therefore demanding collective solutions—calling on respected elders and notable figures to rise and unite the “forces vives” of society in crafting a realistic and lasting plan to end the crisis and build a fairer, more inclusive future.

As OATUU’s affiliate in Madagascar, FI.SE.MA.’s voice carries the weight of workers who stand at the heart of this struggle. The Organisation of African Trade Union Unity expresses its full solidarity with FI.SE.MA. and the Malagasy people and supports their call for unity, justice, and responsible governance, and echoes their demand for an end to repression, manipulation, and neglect. It is only through inclusive dialogue and respect for fundamental rights that the Malagasy people can reclaim their dignity and secure a sustainable path forward.
