OATUU Joins Ghana TUC in Celebrating 80 Years of Workers’ Struggle

Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU), Brother Arezki Mezhoud joined workers, leaders, and dignitaries in Accra to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) on the 8th of September, 2025.

Speaking at the ceremony, Brother Mezhoud, congratulated the TUC and African workers on this historic milestone. He emphasised that the celebration was not only a recognition of Ghana’s labour movement but also of the broader struggles of workers across the continent.

Mr. Mezhoud underscored the importance of history and continuity in the trade union movement, recalling the sacrifices of previous generations and urging today’s leaders to define their mission in defending workers’ rights. He also warned of the challenges posed by global capitalism, which continues to dismantle workers’ gains and weaken solidarity.

“The best tribute to our predecessors,” he said, “is to continue their struggles, defend the same values they sacrificed their lives for, and renew our organisations to meet the challenges of today.”

He concluded with a call for unity and international solidarity, noting OATUU’s unwavering support for workers everywhere, including those in Palestine.
