Honourable Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya and candidate for the AU Chairmanship delivered a powerful address at the 45th General Council of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU), that resonated deeply with the audience. Speaking on the theme, “Strengthening the Role of Trade Unions for Advancing Social Justice for Everyone,” he emphasised the centrality of trade unions in shaping Africa’s socio-economic trajectory.
“Social justice is not just an ideal but a necessity to ensure the dignity of work and the equity of opportunity for every African worker,” Mr. Odinga declared.
He underscored the importance of unity among African nations and trade unions as a driving force for change, asserting:
“Our strength lies in our collective voice. Africa can only achieve its true potential when the rights of workers are at the forefront of our development agenda.”
Addressing the challenges of economic inequality, technological disruptions, and climate change, Honourable Raila called for a “new social contract” that prioritises workers’ rights, decent jobs, and sustainable development. He urged trade unions to lead the charge for a just transition, stating:
“In the face of economic inequality and rapid technological changes, we must ensure that no worker is left behind. Trade unions must champion the shift towards a green economy and advocate for fairness in the digital age.”
Honourable Raila also praised OATUU for its unwavering dedication to Pan-African ideals and its role in amplifying the voices of workers across the continent. He expressed hope that the conference’s deliberations would yield actionable strategies to tackle Africa’s unique labor challenges, particularly in addressing informal employment and strengthening social protections.
In a fitting tribute to his lifelong dedication to Pan-Africanism and workers’ rights, Honourable Raila Odinga was presented with a certificate of recognition by OATUU.
