A delegation from LO-Norway paid a courtesy visit to the Secretariat of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) on 4th September 2026. The delegation comprised Special Advisor, Nina Moberg, Policy Advisor, Kamilla Berggrar and Regional Consultant-Africa, Reuben Sirma Chepkonga.

The delegation was welcomed by the Executives of OATUU, led by the Secretary General, Comrade Arezki Mezhoud and the Vice President of OATUU, Comrade Joshua Ansah. Following the exchange of pleasantries, Mr. Mezhoud provided an overview of OATUU, outlining the organisation’s history, goals, philosophy and guiding principles, as well as its strategic vision for advancing the interests of African workers and trade unions.

The discussion that ensued provided a basis to engage on the opportunities and challenges facing the trade union movement in the current global environment. Mr. Mezhoud highlighted a number of developments taking place within national trade union movements, including developments in Ghana and Kenya, and reflected on their implications for the future of organised labour in Africa.

The discussions further underscored the importance of strengthening solidarity among trade unions across Africa and beyond. With the world increasingly interconnected and described as a global village, both parties recognised the need for trade unions to deepen cooperation, share experiences and build strategic partnerships in order to respond effectively to emerging challenges and opportunities affecting workers.

The engagement reaffirmed the importance of international trade union solidarity and continued dialogue among workers’ organisations as essential tools for promoting decent work, protecting workers’ rights and strengthening the trade union movement in an evolving global economy.
