It is with deep sorrow that the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) mourns the passing of the former National Secretary in charge of Training and Education in the UGTA (General Union of Algerian Workers), Mr. El Hachemi Benmouhoub. He passed on 7th June 2025, leaving behind a powerful legacy of commitment, solidarity, and service.
Mr. Benmouhoub was a longstanding supporter of OATUU and a tireless advocate for labour education and trade union development across the African continent. Throughout his career, he played a pivotal role in strengthening cooperation between Algeria and fellow African nations—organising numerous training sessions, workshops, and capacity-building programmes for emerging trade union leaders. His vision and dedication contributed greatly to the empowerment of workers and the advancement of the African labour movement.
The Secretary General of OATUU, Mr. Arezki Mezhoud extends his sincere condolences to Mr. Benmouhoub’s family, loved ones, colleagues, and to the broader Algerian trade union community. His passing is a profound loss for both Algeria and Africa—a continent he served passionately with unwavering dedication to the principles of unity, education, and workers’ rights.
As we remember Mr. Benmouhoub, we also celebrate his lifelong contributions to African solidarity and trade union development. His memory and legacy will remain etched in the history of our movement.
