The Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) with a heavy heart of sorrow and pain announces the passing away of Comrade Demba Diop, former Assistant Secretary General of the organization on March 23, 2020 as the result of a protracted ailment.
OATUU depicts the late Demba Diop as a great union activist who sacrificed his life for the cause of the workers and the promotion of Pan-African values, Freedom and Social Justice.
The Late Comrade Demba Diop first joined the Malian Air Transport Union and then became a member of the Leadership of the Union National des Travailleurs dU Mali (UNTM). On November 19, 1968 he opposed the military coup d’etat orchestrated by Lieutenant Moussa Traore against President Modibo Keita and found himself imprisoned and tortured for several months.
He was elected to the Secretariat of OATUU as Assistant Secretary General in 1986 where he fought tirelessly for the cause of African workers until his retirement in 2012.
With his death, Africa has just lost a great figure in African and International Trade Unionism known for his righteousness, determination and dedication.
OATUU extends the sincere condolences to his immediate family, to the UNTM Family and the entire working class of Africa.
OATUU asks God to show mercy to him and Welcome him to his vast paradise.
