During the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC), the Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Mr. Gilbert F. Houngbo, met with the Workers’ Group to discuss the major challenges currently facing the world of work. OATUU joined workers’ representatives from across the globe for this important exchange on the future of labour and social justice.
Mr. Houngbo presented a clear and concerning overview of the global situation: geopolitical instability, economic slowdown, rising inequalities, and increasing pressure on social protection systems. According to him, these combined crises “are weakening workers and threatening social progress”.
A key part of his intervention focused on the impact of artificial intelligence. He emphasised that AI is rapidly transforming employment, creating both opportunities and risks. He stressed the need to guide AI toward social progress, ensuring that it remains human-centred, reduces inequalities, and is governed by strong ethical rules.
The Director-General also reiterated the importance of international labour standards, urging Member States to ratify and fully implement the conventions. These standards, he noted, are essential for protecting workers and ensuring sustainable and equitable development.
The meeting reaffirmed the crucial role of social dialogue and the central place of workers in shaping a fair and inclusive future of work.
