President of the Egyptian Trade Union Federation (ETUF), Mohammed Gobran, has highlighted the crippling inequality that has plagued the African continent. According to Mr. Gobran, existing inequality has become more pronounced in recent times due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This has resulted in a high unemployment rate, loss of revenue, increased poverty, and ultimately, a low standard of living for many families.
Addressing participants at the 43rd Session of the OATUU General Council in Cairo, Egypt, Mr. Gobran stated that the conversation around social protection was very essential in these times. He said that it was important to implement effective social protection policies that would promote social security and provide assistance to the numerous citizens who were burdened by current challenges.
In his concluding remarks, the ETUF President made an appeal to the unions to pursue self-reliance and resist interference from foreign actors.
