The Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) held an important meeting on 9th June 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at the headquarters of the International Labour Office (ILO) in Geneva, bringing together 150 worker delegates from across the African continent to assess the work of the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC). The meeting, chaired by the President of OATUU, Dr. Francis Atwoli, and the Secretary-General, Mr. Arezki Mezhoud, addressed a structured agenda that included general information, an evaluation of the session’s outcomes, and various points related to African trade union priorities.
The discussions were rich and highlighted the delegates’ determination to strengthen the cohesion of the African approach and maintain a unified position in the face of global labour challenges. Participants reaffirmed their call for the adoption of an international convention on platform workers, aimed at guaranteeing their fundamental rights and social protection, as well as the importance of reinforcing social dialogue as a key lever for stability, social justice, and sustainable development.
The meeting also conveyed a strong message of solidarity with the workers and people of Palestine, Sudan, the Sahel countries, and Western Sahara, who continue to face severe humanitarian, security, and socio-economic crises. In this spirit, the delegates reaffirmed their determination and commitment to OATUU, as well as their continued struggle for the economic and social emancipation of African workers, emphasising the need to strengthen the unity of the African trade union movement.
Participants welcomed the quality of the debates and reiterated their commitment to defending a strong, coherent, and united African voice within the international trade union movement.
