OATUU Concludes 46th General Council with Renewed Commitment to Solidarity and Pan-African Values

The 46th General Council of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) successfully concluded in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania at the Johari Rotana Hotel, bringing together over 20 African trade union leaders, distinguished Tanzanian government officials, and representatives from international partners including HAK-IS and Memur-Sen and the ILO.

The event was honoured by the presence of the Prime Minister of Tanzania, Kassim Majaliwa who served as the Guest of Honour, and the Deputy Minister of Labour, Hon. Patrobas Paschal Katambi. In his keynote address, the Tanzanian Prime Minister reaffirmed his government’s dedication to social dialogue and tripartism, stressing: “strong unions lead to strong workers which lead to strong communities.”

OATUU Secretary-General, Comrade Arezki Mezhoud, reminded delegates that in the face of current global challenges, OATUU remains steadfast in upholding its Pan-African values and strengthening the unity of African workers.

The Deputy Labour Minister, Hon. Patrobas Paschal Katambi. assured delegates that government will continue to work closely with TUCTA to promote decent work and ensure favourable conditions for workers. In response, OATUU Vice President, Comrade Joshua Ansah, welcomed the commitment but emphasised that OATUU will monitor follow-up actions closely, while also thanking TUCTA for hosting this year’s Council.

The ILO Country Director for East Africa, Caroline Mughalla underlined the ILO’s commitment to collaboration: “ILO values its partnership with the workers’ group and will continue to work with OATUU through ACTRAV to support workers with its resources.”

As host of this year’s General Council, TUCTA President, Comrade Peter Tumaini reminded delegates that the challenges facing workers cannot be overcome by a single union or country, calling for solidarity and collaboration across Africa and globally.Recognising Dedication to the Movement

The General Council also paid tribute to two towering figures of the African labour movement by presenting posthumous and honorary awards:

  • Michael Besha, former OATUU Assistant Secretary-General, remembered for his unwavering service.
  • Mr. Youssif Abdelkarim Youssif, former President of the Sudanese Workers’ Trade Union Federation (SWTUF) and former OATUU Vice President, honoured for his immense contribution to the African trade union movement.
