The Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) has voiced its deep concern over the recent military coup that occurred in Niger on July 26th, 2023, resulting in the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum. This coup has raised alarming implications for both the citizens and workers of Niger, who are already grappling with significant challenges.
OATUU stands resolutely against this military intervention, denouncing its impact on Niger’s constitutional order and expresses solidarity with the unions, workforce, and populace of Niger.
OATUU also strongly opposes any foreign interference, including the measures proposed by ECOWAS against Niger, especially the use of military force. Such measures are poised to have detrimental effects on the people of Niger. Therefore OATUU calls on ECOWAS to strongly reconsider its options and opt for the pathway of dialogue.
