The Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) joins the African Union in observing the 2026 AU Theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.” This theme highlights the urgent need for sustainable water and sanitation services as central to Africa’s socio-economic transformation and the successful realization of Agenda 2063.
Access to safe water and sanitation remains a development imperative. Across Africa, many communities still lack reliable water and sanitation services, leaving them vulnerable to health risks and environmental challenges. Climate change exacerbates these pressures, causing droughts, floods, and contamination that threaten both people and ecosystems.
OATUU underscores the need for strong governance, regulatory systems, and inclusive policies to ensure every African’s right to water and sanitation. We commend the AU’s Africa Water Vision 2063 and urge all stakeholders to take proactive steps to secure safe water, sustainable sanitation, and equitable services for all.
OATUU and its affiliates remain committed to supporting and actively participating in initiatives that advance water security, safeguard public health, and accelerate Africa’s progress toward Agenda 2063.
