The Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) stands in strong solidarity with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) following the recent invasion of its headquarters by the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies. The subsequent invitation of NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero on severe charges is deeply concerning and seen as a violation of trade union rights and international labor standards.
OATUU condemns these actions, viewing them as an unacceptable use of state power against a respected and independent trade union. We urge the Nigerian government to engage in constructive dialogue with the NLC rather than resorting to intimidation and force. Trade unions are vital partners in national development, and their rights must be respected.
We call on President Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that the principles of dialogue and consultation are upheld in dealing with trade unions, as force only risks escalating tensions. OATUU remains committed to supporting the NLC and its leadership during this challenging time, advocating for the protection of their rights and the pursuit of social justice.
