The Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) joins the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day (IWD) 2026 under the theme “Give to Gain.” This year’s theme highlights the importance of investing in women through education, training, and other forms of support that enable them to fully contribute to social and economic development.
Across Africa and around the world, women continue to play a vital role in advancing workers’ rights, strengthening communities, and contributing to economic and social progress. For the trade union movement, this day provides an important opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to promoting decent work, equal opportunities, fair wages, and safe working conditions for women workers.
As we commemorate this important day, OATUU calls on governments, employers, and social partners across the continent to strengthen efforts aimed at eliminating discrimination, closing gender gaps in employment, and creating inclusive workplaces where women can thrive and reach their full potential.
Despite progress in many areas, women across Africa continue to face significant barriers, including limited access to decent work, social protection, productive resources, education and training opportunities, and leadership positions. Persistent challenges such as wage inequalities, discrimination and gender-based violence, the overrepresentation of women in the informal economy, and the vulnerability of domestic and migrant workers further highlight the need for stronger collective action.
In addition, economic crises, climate pressures, and conflicts continue to disproportionately affect women and girls, deepening existing inequalities and undermining their economic security.
OATUU therefore reiterates that Africa’s future cannot be envisioned without the full and meaningful participation of women in all sectors of society. Investing in girls’ education, ensuring women’s access to decent employment, promoting women’s leadership, and strengthening their role in decision-making processes remain essential priorities for achieving sustainable development and social justice.
