The Secretary-General of the UGTA, Mr. Hamou Touahria received the Secretary-General of OATUU, Mr. Arezki Mezhoud, on July 10, 2023, in his office in Algiers. This meeting comes as part of the preparation for the 12th Congress of the organisation scheduled for November in Algiers. This meeting was also an opportunity to discuss the trade union situation in Africa and the challenges imposed by the new international and regional context.
After welcoming the Secretary General of OATUU, Comrade Hamou Touahria reaffirmed the availability of the UGTA to host this continental trade union event in Algiers. He added that the organisation was ready to commit maximum effort to ensure the success of the program. He recalled that UGTA had always supported the Pan-African trade union movement, notably OATUU, of which she is a founding member. He stated that the national center would continue to strengthen ties of cooperation and solidarity with other African trade union organisations.
After expressing his gratitude for the warm welcome, the Secretary General of OATUU said that the cooperation and solidarity between OATUU and the UGTA were well anchored in the history of both organisations. According to him, all African trade unionists recognize the role played by UGTA in strengthening and promoting the pan-African trade union movement.
Both parties resolved to work closely to prepare for the upcoming congress and ensure it is held in the best possible conditions.
As a reminder, the decision to organise the 12th Congress in Algiers was taken at the end of the 43rd session of the OATUU General Council held in October 2022 in Cairo, Egypt, following the proposal of the UGTA to host it in Algeria.
