Strengthening Trade Unions to Advance Social Justice: Highlights from OATUU’s 45th General Council

The 45th General Council of the Organization of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) convened on November 22, 2024, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, Ghana, under the theme Strengthening the Role of Trade Unions for Advancing Social Justice for Everyone. The event brought together distinguished African trade union leaders, international labour organisations, and high-ranking officials to deliberate on critical issues facing African workers.

Former Kenyan Prime Minister and candidate for the AU Chairmanship, Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga delivered a rousing keynote address that emphasised the urgent need for social justice in Africa. He commended OATUU’s unwavering dedication to advancing workers’ rights, stating:

“Social justice is the bedrock of any thriving society. Strengthening trade unions is not just a necessity—it is a duty to ensure fairness, equality, and dignity for every worker.”

Honourable Odinga was awarded a certificate by OATUU in recognition of his enduring commitment to Pan-African ideals and his significant contributions to fostering unity across the continent.

President of OATUU, Dr. Francis Atwoli underscored the vital role trade unions play in shaping equitable policies and combating socio-economic challenges. He highlighted the importance of unity and capacity building, stating:

“Trade unions are the voice of the voiceless. Together, through solidarity and strategic action, we can confront inequality and lay the foundation for sustainable development across Africa.”

Dr. Atwoli also acknowledged the enduring partnership between OATUU and international organisations like the ILO, which support the union’s mission to enhance workers’ rights.

Country Director of the ILO Office for West Africa, Dr. Vanessa Phala highlighted the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions, an initiative aimed at fast-tracking progress toward decent work and social justice worldwide. Dr. Phala pledged the ILO’s continued support to OATUU. She reaffirmed the ILO’s commitment to building the capacity of trade unions to influence policies that benefit workers and promote inclusive economic growth.

Some individuals were honoured for their outstanding contributions to OATUU’s mission. Mr. Alex Bonney and Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah of the Trades Union Congress (Ghana) were recognized for their commitment and service to OATUU.

The Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (Ghana), Comrade Joshua Ansah, touching on the event’s theme,  emphasised the critical role trade unions play in the fight for equality and fair treatment across the continent. He noted:

“Social justice is not an abstract concept; it is a commitment to ensuring that every worker, irrespective of their background, has access to decent work, fair wages, and social protection.”

Dr. Ansah called for solidarity and unity among African trade unions, urging them to remain resolute in addressing challenges such as inequality, poverty, and the evolving demands of the global labor market.

The event was a resounding success, reinforcing the collective resolve of trade unions to champion the rights of African workers and advance social justice on the continent. Long live OATUU! Long live trade union solidarity!
