In a significant address at the plenary meeting of the 112th International Labour Conference, Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU), Arezki Mezhoud, highlighted the pressing challenges facing Africa and the urgent need for social justice and global cooperation. Mr. Mezhoud commended the efforts of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in advocating for social justice and announced that OATUU has joined the global coalition for social justice. This coalition aims to achieve the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union’s 2063 agenda.
Mr. Mezhoud emphasized the profound issues plaguing Africa, including conflicts, insecurity, climate change, governance deficits, and political instability. He warned that these challenges would exacerbate poverty and social inequalities, driving African youth to seek better lives elsewhere under perilous conditions. He called for a multipolar global order based on mutual respect and a win-win cooperation, arguing that human-centered economic development is crucial for the social emancipation of African workers.
Expressing concern over the rise of extremism, labor market disruptions, and assaults on fundamental rights, Mr. Mezhoud highlighted the severe implications for global peace and worker welfare. He stressed the ILO’s unique role in promoting social justice and economic development, essential for eradicating poverty and underdevelopment.
Mr. Mezhoud concluded by reiterating the solidarity of African workers with the people of Gaza and those affected by conflicts in Sudan, Libya, and other regions. He called for an immediate ceasefire and advocated for peace and stability, expressing hope that concerted efforts would realize the aspirations of African workers for a better future.
