The Organisation of African Trade Union Unity has hosted a four-day face-to-face training activity organised by ACTRAV-Turin in Accra, Ghana from the 11th to the 14th of April. The training which happened back-to-back with the organisation’s 50th Anniversary Celebration was titled “Young Workers and the Future of Trade Unions in Africa”.
The training was arranged to equip young leaders with skills that would help them navigate a changing context in the world of work and position them as the future of the trade union movement. The participants also had the opportunity to engage with veterans and experts on union matters and gained relevant insight into trade union challenges and opportunities.
According to youth leader and participant, Wesley Gatsi, more youth-oriented activities need to be injected into the trade union agenda in order to encourage more young people to identify with the cause of unions.
Another participant, Hilary Opuni-Frimpong said, “the course has equipped me with extensive knowledge on trade union strategies and actions needed to revitalise the trade union movement. I believe that I am better equipped to champion the youth agenda in my organisation with the insight I have gained.”
The course comes on the back of a 5-week online course titled ‘Young Workers and Trade Union Revitalisation’ which took place from 14th November to 16th December 2022.
